Time to add option in Hacker News "AI excluded Show HN"
Bored of AI advertisement. Thinking to stop visiting hacker news just because these LLM projects and updates. There should be an option to users which will exclude AI related things. Even if that going to be done using artificial intelligence in backend, no problem. I’m satisfied!
We did a Show HN a few weeks ago (updated from 4 years ago) and have no AI, LLM, or anything and got... zero traction. We're on ProductHunt today but everything that is trending is all AI stuff. So that is where we're at.
The new HN rule[1], re: ai, is limited to comments. I think this is a fair balance as more actually useful projects shared here are built with increasingly more ai. Comments and discussion is one thing, projects another, with the later falling into a realm where I'm more concerned with the quality than how it is arrived at. Slop HN has decreased significantly, in part from low reception (not limited to HN) and in part because many have stopped using Show HN.
I think Show HN has been closed off to new users in an attempt to gatekeep it against slop entries and that's why the quality has increased.
And I think "how it is arrived at," in other words, the art of code, is what HN is supposed to be about. It isn't merely a place to advertise startups or projects, the goal is to satisfy intellectual curiosity and have discussions. That goal is undermined when projects are built with AI because the person presenting them will not be capable of discussing anything but their prompts and AI processes, which is not at all interesting.
Actually [2] does ok, of course search doesn't list dead links.
